This week's assignment and readings gave me the opportunity to delve a little deeper into the implications of action research. I particularly enjoyed hearing from Drs. Chargois and Lewis and also Johnny Briseno of Rancho Isabella. These men have taken action research into their schools and districts and are utilizing it as an impetus for change. Putting the ability to find solutions to the problems in the hands of teachers is helping them to move more quickly. Teachers feel empowered to try something new and teach each other about the effects they observe.
In my own action research planning this week, I learned how to look more deeply at what it is I am interested in finding out. I simplified my project so that it will be clear that the results I see are a reflection of the action I take. Originally I was going to study two separate groups of students and let each of them use a separate internet based language learning program. Now I want to really focus on what is keeping the teachers from using the programs we have and how training and technical assistance might move them forward. I will also compare English acquisition levels of students utilizing web based programs and those who are not given that opportunity. The data I look at will be available at the end of this school year after we receive our student results from the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS).
